Sola Salons provides private studio spaces for hair stylists, aestheticians, manicurists and other local specialists. AlexAllen Studio was asked to re-think the design of Sola's existing brand for their newest location in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The below-grade space was completely gutted to create 33 new studios equipped with hair washing sinks, built-in storage, and furnishings. A lounge acts as the focal point, anchored by a large communal island with a fluted base, and lit by a dropped ceiling reminiscent of the city's underground sidewalk vaults.

Several key design elements create an identity for the brand and define the space's use and mood.
A waiting bench and directory are contained in the entry's wood clad arch which frames a view to the lounge and studios beyond.
The lounge can function as a waiting area for clients, a lunch spot for salon owners, or a gathering space for special events.
Glass front studios line the hallways and give each occupant an opportunity to showcase their services.
The natural wood, black-stained oak, and concrete materials used throughout provide an elegant and subdued palette that fits the neighborhood’s aesthetic and creates a neutral backdrop for a variety of tenants.
The layout maximizes the number of rentable studios while also creating comfortable communal spaces for local small businesses and their clientele.
